Meeting Stakeholder Needs: Question 1

Extension Climatologist-Biologist concept: What innovative methods and research can the NC CSC develop to communicate climate-related science to land and water managers so they both understand it AND know how to use it?

This issue is primarily addressed through the ReVAMP concept and the management-focused solicited projects.

The NC CSC is working to address extension-type requests through its Resource for Vulnerability Assessment and Mitigation Planning (ReVAMP). As stated in the NC CSC’s five year plan, stakeholders have articulated a need for technical assistance in applying climate science to the management process, including vulnerability assessments, adaptation, and mitigation. The ReVAMP concept will help address this need. The five-year plan for the ReVAMP framework has an initial focus on configuring and maintaining the ReVAMP infrastructure with the goal of having an operational ReVAMP infrastructure established by 2017.

The NC CSC believes that the best way to translate the best available climate science into useful information for land managers, at this point, is through a fairly specific, case-by-case basis. However, we can also strategize by looking for common tools and techniques that can be extracted from the portfolio of solicited projects, the foundational science areas, and the capacity building efforts.

As outlined in its 2013 and repeated in its 2015 solicitation, the NC CSC is looking to develop ReVAMP and establish the process of this climate extension-type work through management-decision focused projects. In those solicitations, the NC CSC requests multi-year projects that will use climate science to inform a decision process with management teams ready and willing to use and help define the ReVAMP. The hope is that the specific work from those funded projects can be generalized into how climate science can be communicated with a broader range of stakeholders and otherwise brought to bear on land and water management actions.
