Education & Training

The Foundational Science Areas help to guide the research and tools being created at the NC CSC, while capacity building initiatives extend that research to land managers and stakeholders. These programs usually fall into the following categories.

1. Training in partnership with the National Conservation Training Center.
2. Training on resources and tools that aid in land management
3. Supporting university partners in their student education activities.

The NC CSC works closely with the National Conservation Training Center to provide regional offerings of their climate-related courses and helps structure develop of new courses aimed at natural resource managers and researchers. Staff members have participated as instructors for the Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment course, were able to bring the course to the Greater Yellowstone Area in April 2014. The course helps guide management practitioners in: (1) identifying which species or systems are most vulnerable to projected climate change and (2) understanding vulnerability in the context of climate shifts and existing stressors. The NC CSC is also assisting with the development of "climate smarts" and "scenario planning" courses through the NCTC. Courses to date include:

  • NCTC Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment, Jackon, WY, April 22-23, 2014. J. Morisette instructor, B. Miller instructor in Training, S. McNeeley student, J. Lackett student, NC CSC covered all related expenses for course, travel support for 3 tribal participants and several NC-CSC-funded investigators, and helped in selected regionally relevant class projects.
  • NCTC Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment, La Crosse, WI, Sept 28 - Oct 3, 2014. J. Morisette instructor, B. Miller instructor, NC CSC covering travel expenses for LCC selected participants.
  • NCTC Climate Smart Conservation, Rapid City, SD, July 28-30, 2015. J. Morisette instructor, B. Miller instructor, V. Small instructor, NC CSC covering travel expenses for selected tribal participants.

As the NC CSC develops tools and resources, we will work to provide training opportunities to help bring these tools to the wider community. The Software for Assisted Habitat Modeling is one such tool and the NC CSC, in partnership with the USGS Fort Collins Science Center, offers training on the use of SAHM twice a year.  The NC CSC has also supported training for the ST-SIM spatially-explicit simulation modeling software that is being used by the center.

In addition to training land managers, the NC CSC supports its university consortium to educate the next generation of resource experts. Staff members have provided guest lectures, co-taught classes, supported student projects, and served on graduate committees.

  • Morisette assisted with the UAz Instit. for Tribal Env. Professional, Climate Change Adaptation Planning May 12, 2014, Anacortes, WA.
  • NC CSC staff assisted with offering Climate Adaptation for Conservation training in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society. December 9-10, 2015.
  • Assessing Watershed Vegetation Impacts under Climate Change Workshop Training in partnership with USGS EROS, the Climate Change and Water Working Group (CCAWWG), and the UCAR COMET Program. This workshopis part of CCAWWG/COMET Professional Development Series, "Assessing Natural Systems Impacts under Climate Change." May 17-19, 2016

We partner with the AmericaView program to provide phenology cameras that are used by universities and their students. Our work with Tribal Colleges on Phenology Observations further expands our audience beyond that of traditional resource managers and researchers.
