Climate Model Output: How can the NC CSC help us know which climate models (General Circulation Models, GCMs, and downscaling) and climate data to use?

This issue is primarily addressed through the Climate-driver Foundational Science Area.

The NC CSC’s Climate-driver Foundational Research Team directs its research toward clarifying and quantifying the trajectory of change in past, present, and future climate drivers within the NC CSC domain, from the Holocene to the recent past (that is, 1950 to the present) and to the future (up to A.D. 2100). An important part of this research area will be to quantify the non-stationary nature of climate drivers for the region, and to help our stakeholders to consider ways to either reduce or deal with the uncertainty of precipitation projections.

The NC CSC can analyze available climate datasets to develop a suite of annual, seasonal, and diagnostic indicators of climate features that have potential impact on natural resource management issues that affect our stakeholders across the region. Priorities for our climate driver research, specific climate summaries or derivatives, and the delivery of results will be guided by the plans for adaptation and mitigation goals which are defined by the agencies, State, local, and Tribal governments represented by the SAC (Stakeholder Advisory Committee). The NC CSC can focus on geographic areas and ecosystems/habitats of concern to the Stakeholder Advisory Committee and other clients, based on our current understanding of climate and climate variability in the region.

NC CSC research on regional climate models considers how the research fits client-based and management decision activities. NC CSC climate information and products will be accessible to our stakeholders and integrated into ecological response models within the ReVAMP as input to the vulnerability assessment and management options components of the framework. The NC CSC can translate the best available climate science into useful information for land and wildlife managers on a fairly specific, case-by-case basis, while also noting common needs for tools, techniques and information.
